That would be nice, right now buoyancy is like the proverbial "elevator button" that SCUBA students are warned not to use it as.

Independent head-movement would be sweet. Possibly something like in DayZ - holding Alt down lets you move your head around and look everywhere without changing movement direction. It works pretty well.

Don't know if this is the correct place for this question, but I haven't seen it asked in other places. Will there be technical diving (e.g. deep wrecks or caves)? Perhaps, as I noted above, this could be a way or mode of play that could be more realistic and less forgiving than the "arcade style." The more realistic settings, after getting the controls down, would be great.

There has been a confirmation for both an arcade and simulation mode.
Caves are actually mentioned in an interview from the GDC thread.

As for wrecks these have been announced:

Tech diving wise I'd say the Bismark would be a challenge for sure.

Have you implemented a procedural random number generator in order to synchronize environmental effects and algorithms being calculated and rendered on separate machines without transmitting the result data and therein only the seed data?

Suggestion
It may be quick and efficient to create several 2D maps each with a corresponding displacement map, tailored for each fish variety, stating areas they can occupy, without clipping occurring. Within this map you then calculate each fishes movement, eliminating the need to constantly check the 3D variables you have set, which are a constant, and can be represented by a constant map for each environment. The fish only needs to continuously check other fish on the same plane, and the boarders the map defines; reducing processing overhead and allowing schooling behavior intrinsically.
Your building -and hopefully patenting- a simulation. That’s what the game engine does. And your use of resources is critical, if you can use memory to save cpu time, do it; you have a graphics engine to run on top of it too.
(Optionally points of intersection between planes can be defined as well which would allow you to see where fish may clip into each other, or be coded to interact with a behavior beyond the schooling.)

We don't have a final answer on both questions. There will be a lot of different species, but we don't have an maximum number on that. As for the oxygen, this is something we still need to calibrate.

I think it world be cool if you could feed the fish and once they have gotten used to you, you can put them into a fish log.

I think there should be biomes, like you could travel to a lake or a rainforest on a map and there will be other species there. There can also be ancient temples and artifacts that sank to the bottom. Also there should be some islands with seals and turtles laying eggs on them. Just thoughts.

I too kept finding myself swimming into stuff while looking around. It would be nice to be able to swim straight and turn just your head without changing direction or pitch.

I read this thread and I was wondering, if we vote for "in game chat", will this result in getting a simple chatbox or will this result in prioritizing the development of the handgesture tool? Because I think that would change peoples mind when voting next update

This will be an in game chat by a chatbox. The hand gestures will also be something we will expand. But this will not be included in the in game chat.
