Okavango crocodiles

Trevor

Hi all,

This week I have added the nile crocodile to the Okavango scene. I have also added the most basic of AI to the crocodiles and will work on more advanced ones in the coming week. At the moment the nile crocodiles have the following behaviour:

- They will swim on varying speeds in their own territories
- They will often look around in a direction to simulate their intelligence
There were quite some hurdles to overcome in regards to animation and general behaviour for the crocodiles. As they are large intelligent creatures it takes more effort to achieve the realism we want. For example, most of the time the crocodiles are very idle and slow, lurking around until something happens. Our old system didn't support near-idle creatures so I had to implement that. The foundations of the creature are now there, and you can expect the following behaviours in the future:

- Surfacing / lurking on the surface.
- Walk on land, enter / leave the water
- Smarter head movement ( look at other fish, objects or the players )
- Hunt & eat!

I have also requested some updates to animations from our art team. Sometimes the crocodiles can still appear quite stiff at the moment, so we are working on improving that!

Community Bugs fixed and new gloves added

Johann
Fixing the many bugs was the main point of action this week. Scanning the forums and support emails for bug reports, prioritizing and fixing them was the primary goal. For a list of changes to the game that's in the patch this week, check out this topic.

One of the thing I looked into this week was the buddies not showing up. Since the Unity 5 build, downloading customization information has changed. Before the change, all information about customization was downloaded, like the items that are available, their names, icons and other information. Not only that, but it was also downloaded for every player that joined the game. All of this is duplicate information. I've changed that so only the needed information is downloaded for each player, mainly the items that they have equipped. With that change, the buddy information somehow became lost. The buddy information is included again in this update.

Level mission and more

Lenn
This week I continued my work on the Okavango Delta level, l added some missions, more collectibles and some more decoration to really bring the Delta to life.

Procedural trailing

Jeroen

Our procedural head tracking and procedural tail trailing systems have already been put in place and the crocodile model was another model that could use these systems.
I have tweaked this system a little bit to allow for more freedom in the types of models that are supported by these systems. they can then be used by models which have a slightly different bone structure to the other procedurally animated models (like the dolphins and the sharks).

Thanks for the fixes and updates. I took a quick look at Okavango and ran across some of the crocodiles. The first one startled me. I'm enjoying exploring that map.

I noticed that the Okavango delta looks really good. the transition from land to water and vise versa looks so real. the river bottom textures look incredible. all the graphics are looking awesome!

Croc is definitely cool, but still very stiff. Also, it clips through everything.
